To pass the DMV written test in order to get your instruction permit, you need to achieve an 83% passing score by answering 38 questions correctly out of the 46 questions on the test if you are under 18. If you are over 18, the official test — just like this DMV practice test — will only have 36 questions, but you must answer the same percentage of questions correctly. Questions will be multiple-choice with three possible answers and presented on a touchscreen computer at an automated DMV Touchscreen Terminal (TST) for fast and efficient scoring. If you’re between 15 ½ and 17 ½, you’ll also need to provide proof that you’re enrolled in a driver’s education class. If you’re over 17 ½, you are not required to take a driving course. Your instruction permit will be $39, and testing is not allowed to start after 4:30 to give you ample time to take your exam before the DMV closes.
