The knowledge exam for a permit and license in Massachusetts is a timed exam offered primarily on an automated testing system. Test takers are given 25 minutes to answer 25 multiple-choice questions based on information from the 2024 Massachusetts Driver’s Manual. Tests are offered without an appointment on a computer in English and Spanish, or non-computerized in over 20 languages, including Farsi, Italian, and many more. If you’re not able to read questions, you may take an audio version of the exam in English or Spanish and will just be required to bring your own headphones. The RMV also offers a person-to-person oral exam if a written or audio version of the exam is not a valid option. Person-to-person exams are only offered in English and must be scheduled in advance, with written documentation of a disability that requires this assistance. The permit test will cost $30, and at that time of testing, you’ll have the option to prepay $30 for your driving test. Don’t forget to bring proof of identity, residence, and signature, as well as a parental signature on your application if you’re a minor. Use this RMV practice test to help you study and pass your Massachusetts knowledge test.
