To get your learner’s permit and/or license in Massachusetts, you’ll need to be at least 16 and pass a knowledge test based on the 2024 Massachusetts Driver’s Manual. The test will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions of which you’ll need to correctly answer at least 18 of the questions in under 25 minutes. To be eligible for a learner’s permit, you’ll have to take your knowledge exam at your local RMV as well as a vision test, fill out a permit application, with parental signature if you’re a minor, and provide proof of identity, residence, and signature. Your permit test will be $30 each time you attempt the exam. After you have your permit, you will need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of driving under supervision with a licensed driver. As a minor, you’ll also be required to complete a driver’s education course before you can apply for your license. You must hold your valid permit for at least six months while practicing your driving skills. This RMV practice test will focus on road signs and situations, which are covered extensively in chapter four of the driving manual.
