Considering adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)? It’s a great idea that can significantly increase your job prospects and income if you obtain it. The U.S. government has determined what cargo is considered hazardous and the Hazmat endorsement permits drivers to transport these materials. These materials range from explosives and industrial chemicals to radioactive materials and even infectious substances. But keep in mind that the most important objective of the endorsement process and these U.S. regulations is to ensure your safety and that of the people and environment you drive through.

There are multiple steps involved in obtaining a Hazmat endorsement, including a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check, and a knowledge test that is administered by the DOR. The test covers federal regulations, safe handling practices, packaging, quantity, and the configurations allowed for hazardous cargo. Missouri’s knowledge test is made up of 30 questions and must be passed with a score of at least 80% (24 out of 30 answers must be correct) (Missouri CDL Handbook 2024). Also note that the minimum age for the Hazmat endorsement is 21 for both interstate and intrastate driving in Missouri.

With all of that in mind, let’s get back to the potential income increase available with this endorsement. Some online sources state that the Hazmat endorsement generally adds 10–20% to a driver’s pay! In Missouri, there are multiple industries with cargo transport that require a Hazmat endorsement. If you don’t have it, that work won’t be available to you. Missouri industries making substantial use of Hazmat transport include fossil fuels, manufacturing, agriculture (pesticides and fertilizers), and pharmaceuticals. Also, {state-name) contains more nuclear power plants than any other state. This sounds amazing and a little daunting, right? It doesn’t have to be complicated at all.

Our Missouri DOR Hazmat Endorsement practice tests are carefully designed to skip over all of the extraneous information you’ll find during an internet search and go straight to the relevant material. Our tests purposely mimic the structure and content of what you’ll face on the official DOR test.
Once you feel ready, just take the necessary documents to the DOR, submit your fingerprints and background check information, pay the fees, and take the test. What are you waiting for? Add your endorsement and enjoy the added benefits.
