When looking to get a commercial driver’s license in Virginia you need to pay attention to all the details or you’ll end up making several trips to the DMV. That means wasting valuable time that you might otherwise use making money as a commercial driver. To make sure you have everything ready for your first visit, follow our advice. First you need to study the official Virginia Commercial Driver’s Manual. This will have all the facts you need in order to pass the General Knowledge exam. However, the exam is pretty tricky. It’s 50 multiple-choice questions about escape ramps and trailer speeds. You only have an hour and if you get over 10 wrong you have to come back to the DMV another day. Bummer. To see how these questions appear in the context of the exam, we suggest taking our CDL General Knowledge practice tests. These feature a hint function as well as tracking data that lets you know where to focus your studies. But more importantly, the questions are very similar, if not identical to the real thing. Pass our practice tests and you can be confident when facing the real thing. However, knowledge isn’t the only thing you need to bring to the Virginia DMV to secure your CDL. You also need to make sure your documentation is in order. First, the Virginia DMV requires you have a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Also known as a DOT card, this certifies that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. However, you can’t go to just any medical professional to get one. This can only be obtained from a licensed medical examiner as listed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. You’ll also need to bring along a valid current driver’s license and proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency. For this last piece, a green card, social security card or birth certificate will do nicely. Then you’ll be all set to make your first visit a successful one.
