There are a number of steps on your journey toward getting your South Dakota Commercial driver’s license. The first you might want to secure is obtaining a required Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Also known as a DOT card, this certifies that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle in South Dakota. However, you cannot just ask any medical profession to provide you with this, you need to contact a licensed medical examiner as listed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. Certification usually lasts two years unless the examiner determines that you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure. Other documentation you need when you visit the South Dakota DMV is proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency. For this you can use a green card, social security card, or birth certificate. Lastly, they’ll want to see a current, valid driver’s license. Once they have all your documentation, you’ll be able to take the General Knowledge test. But that’s no cakewalk. It’s a 50 question multiple-choice exam that you have to finish in less than an hour. The questions are tricky and if you get more than 10 wrong you have failed the test. If you fail, you’ll have to come back another day to retake it. Be prepared to pass the first time by making sure you have the official South Dakota Commercial Driver’s Manual and taking an ample number of practice exams. Our CDL General Knowledge practice tests feature a hint button and tracking results that allow you to see where you should focus your studies. Also, the questions are very similar if not actually identical to what you will see on the exam. Once you are confident that you can pass the practice tests with ease, you will be ready to face the real thing and pass on your first attempt.
