Driver's Manual

Freedom, convenience, fuel economy, ease of parking, lower purchase costs and reduced maintenance are just some of the advantages of riding a motorcycle in Arkansas. However, there is a tradeoff. Motorcycle riding brings with it a bunch of risks that automobile drivers rarely need to think of. In the event of a collision, riders are more likely to sustain serious injuries. Even in minor accidents, riders may receive major injuries. This is why it’s so important that motorcyclists take the time to develop their skills set before heading out on the road.

The Class M & MD

In order to obtain a motorcycle license (the Class M license) in the state of Arkansas, you must pass a written exam and a road test. Although the state does not offer a separate motorcycle manual, it does include a section on motorcycles, motor driven cycles and motorized bicycles in the Arkansas Driver’s Manual. It’s also recommended that learners review information on sharing the road with other vehicles, as well as defensive driving techniques.

The Class M license is a non-restricted license which allows holders to operate a motorcycle on public roadways. Applicants must be 16 years old or older and must have previously possessed an instruction permit, which proves successful completion of knowledge, vision and practical skills tests.

For younger AR applicants, there is the Class MD license. This is a restricted motorcycle license for individuals between 14 and 16 years old. Holders of the Class MD are only permitted to operate motorcycles displacing 250cc or less. Those under 16 may not carry passengers.

AR Motorcycle Regulations

Since a two-wheeled vehicle is more affected by road conditions than four-wheeled vehicles, it’s important that riders are constantly aware of conditions such as weight, speed and surfaces and how such conditions affect balance and control of their motorcycle. The state Driver’s Manual talks about regulations that apply specifically to riders of two-wheeled vehicles, such as motorcycles or motor-driven cycles. Such regulations include:

The Arkansas Motorcycle Manual offers a thorough introduction to the basic skills and knowledge necessary for safe motorcycle operation.
