California. The Golden State. Since you’re visiting this site, you must be interested in the golden opportunities available once you’ve added the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). California allows drivers 18 to 20 years of age to obtain this endorsement (keep in mind though that federal CDL laws only permit such drivers to transport cargo within the state). According to 2025 driverreach.com, the Hazmat endorsement not only broadens a driver’s marketability but can result in higher pay and higher recruitment potential from companies!
The Hazmat endorsement permits drivers to transport materials that the U.S. government has deemed hazardous. These materials range from explosives to certain types of fuel and industrial chemicals to radioactive materials and infectious substances. That said, the most important objective of this endorsement process is to ensure your safety and protect the people and environment in your driving area.
To add this endorsement, you’ll need to pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check and the DMV knowledge test. The knowledge test includes topics like federal regulations, substance handling, material packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations for hazardous materials. You’ll need a score of 80% on California’s knowledge test, which is made up of 30 questions (24 out of 30 answers must be correct) (California CDL Handbook 2025).
Regarding the benefits available with this endorsement in the Golden State, there are multiple industries with cargo transport that require a Hazmat endorsement, including chemical manufacturing, petroleum and energy (Chevron is headquartered in California), and pharmaceuticals (both Amgen Inc. and Gilead Sciences are headquartered here). This sounds amazing and a little daunting, right? It doesn’t have to be complicated at all.
Our online California DMV Hazmat Endorsement practice tests are strategically designed to circumvent all the extraneous information you’ll find, get straight to what’s relevant, and actually mimic what you will face on the official DMV test. Ready to begin? The first thing you’ll want to do is apply for your fingerprints and background check. Because the results can take weeks to arrive, you can use that wait time to study with our practice tests. Once you feel confidently prepared, you’ll visit the DMV with the necessary documents, pay any related fees, and confidently take the test.
