The School Bus (S) endorsement allows drivers to operate school buses with a capacity of up to 15 occupants, including themselves. Those looking to drive larger school buses, such as the Types B, C and D models, must acquire both the S endorsement and a Passenger Vehicles (P) endorsement on their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). These endorsements are granted after passing their respective knowledge tests as well as a skills test in a school bus. For the School Bus endorsement, aspiring school bus drivers must also complete a formal training program and pass a criminal background check.
If this process feels complicated, try to break it down into steps and adopt a smarter approach. It’s not difficult to pass the CDL School Bus knowledge test in Colorado, as long as you prepare ahead.
Aspiring commercial drivers should study the official 2025 CDL manual first, which contains a section dedicated to the School Bus endorsement. This manual explains key concepts of school bus driving like danger zones, proper use of mirrors, managing students, and railroad-highway grade crossings. However, while the manual is a good starting point, it might not be enough to guarantee a high score on the official written exam.
In Colorado, around half of the students rely on school buses, leading to a high demand for qualified drivers. There are several conditions you have to meet if you want to become one yourself. Maintaining a clean driving record and passing an annual review of your driving history are the most notable ones since they’re the main disqualifiers for some candidates.
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam is also required to ensure you’re physically fit to handle emergency situations. Furthermore, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation will perform a background check to identify any concerning offenses. Crimes involving minors are automatic disqualifiers, and felonies related to drugs and alcohol may also prevent you from receiving the School Bus endorsement.
If you meet all the requirements, you’re good to go. While you’re cleared to take the official written exam, you should try our free CDL School Bus practice tests first, specially made for people in Colorado. Updated for March 2025, these tests have 20 questions specific to the School Bus endorsement. To pass, you’ll need a score of 80%, but it is normal to fail on your first attempts. While these practice tests offer a great way to evaluate your knowledge, you can also use them during your learning phase as they make good educational tools.
