If you’re here to expand your career options and boost your income in Florida, you’ve come to the right place! Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) allows you to transport materials regulated by the government to keep you, the public, and the environment safe. These materials range from explosives to fuel and industrial chemicals, radioactive cargo, and infectious materials. The endorsement process makes you, those around you, and the places you drive through a top priority.

To earn your Hazmat endorsement, you must meet requirements that include a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background and fingerprinting test and a knowledge test conducted by the DMV. The knowledge test covers federal safety regulations, handling of the materials, packaging, and the types of transport configurations required for each hazard type and quantity. In Florida, the knowledge test has 30 questions and must be passed with a score of at least 80% (24 out of 30 answers must be correct). The minimum age for this endorsement is 21 for interstate travel, but some states like Illinois allow drivers aged 18 and older the endorsement when remaining within state lines. For more information, the official guide can be found here: (Florida CDL Handbook 2025).

Okay, enough about that. Let’s get to the goods! The 2025 Florida CDL manual states that having this endorsement commands higher salary for the driver. Online sources share salary data of 10–20% increases in your pay! In Florida, there are multiple industries with cargo transport that require a Hazmat endorsement. These include chemical, agriculture, oil and gas, construction (paints and solvents), and medical wastes, just to name a few. This sounds lucrative but also a bit intimidating, right? Keep reading and see what we have to ease those concerns!
