Permitting you to transport materials the U.S. government has judged hazardous, the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement added to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will open a host of new career opportunities and higher income potential. Ensuring your safety as well as protecting the people and environment along your routes is the primary objective of the endorsement process. We’ll also discuss some of the financial benefits in more detail in just a moment!

The minimum age for the Hazmat endorsement is 21 for interstate travel. Idaho, however, is one of the states that allow drivers aged 18–20 the endorsement, but they cannot transport cargo across state lines until they turn 21. All drivers must go through a couple of steps before this endorsement can be added to their CDL. This process includes a background check, fingerprinting, and the DMV knowledge test. The test covers topics like federal regulations, handling and packaging of hazardous materials, allowed quantities, and approved transport configurations. Idaho’s knowledge test is made up of 30 questions and must be passed with a score of at least 80% (24 out of 30 answers must be correct) (Idaho CDL Handbook 2024).

Let’s get back to the potential income increase available with this endorsement. According to the 2024 Idaho CDL manual, the Hazmat endorsement opens up an entire arena of cargo transport options that are not available to non-holders! In Idaho, there are multiple industries with cargo transport that require the Hazmat endorsement, such as agriculture (pesticides and fertilizers), mining (explosives and chemicals), manufacturing (solvents, paints, and cleaning agents), and energy production (petroleum and natural gas). This sounds very lucrative and a little overwhelming, right? It doesn’t have to be. Let’s simplify things a bit.

You’ll quickly find that searching online for study material will return an overwhelming amount of information. Our Idaho DMV Hazmat Endorsement practice tests are strategically designed to zero in on the necessary information for the test and avoid a lot of the extraneous information not needed to pass. Our tests replicate both the structure and content of the official DMV test, both reinforcing the material and getting you very comfortable with the test process. When you feel prepared, you’ll take your necessary documents to the DMV, pay any related fees, and take the official knowledge test.
