Free ME CDL Double/Triple Trailers Practice Test 2025

    • Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
    • Based on 2025 ME commercial driver's license manual
    • Updated for April 2025

To be legally allowed to pull double trailers in Maine (triples are not allowed), you must meet a set of requirements, including passing a series of tests. First, because these trucks are combination vehicles, you must obtain a Class A CDL. To do this, you must pass the General Knowledge and Combination knowledge tests. It’s wise to pass the Air Brakes knowledge test too, because virtually all heavy combination trucks are equipped with air brakes. Finally, you must pass a skills test in such a vehicle.

To drive double-trailer combination vehicles, you must also obtain a Double/Triple (T) endorsement on your Class A CDL. To get this endorsement, you must pass the Double/Triple knowledge test. This test covers such topics as safe handling, air brakes on doubles and triples, coupling and uncoupling, emergency situations, and state and federal regulations on doubles and triples. (However, no special skills test is required for this endorsement.)

This knowledge test is based on Chapter 7 (Doubles and Triples) of the official Maine CDL manual (Maine CDL Handbook 2025). We offer tools to complement the official manual with intensive training. This is one of our tools: the first of five Maine Doubles and Triples Endorsement Practice Tests. Like the Double/Triple knowledge test, this practice test is based on the official CDL manual. It’s up to date as of April 2025. The 20 multiple-choice practice questions and answers on this practice test address such topics as air lines, converter dollies, coupling, emergency situations, following distance, and rearward amplification.

Our AI Assistant can give you a hint if you get stuck on a question or an immediate explanation of the correct answer if you still miss the question. There’s no time limit; take as much time as you want. You can even take this practice test as an “open-book” test by keeping the CDL manual open for reference in another browser tab or separate window.

Demand for drivers qualified to pull doubles has been high. Carriers often prefer doubles for more efficient transport (i.e., more freight per trip). However, only a minority of truck drivers have this qualification. In Maine as elsewhere, the logistics sector makes heavy use of double trailers. Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) carriers and freight carriers use doubles for efficient transport of multiple shipments. The retail sector also makes frequent use of double trailers to transport bulk products to supermarkets, restaurants, and retail stores.
