Before you head off to the Maine DMV to try to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (or Commercial Learner’s Permit) you have to get all your ducks in a row. That means both studying for the General Knowledge test and getting your paperwork in order. The first thing you might want to do is to go out and get a required Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Also known as a DOT card, this certificate signifies that you are medically and physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle for the great state of Maine. The certificate usually is good for two years, unless the examiner feels you have a condition that requires monitoring, like high blood pressure. However, you can’t just go to any medical professional. You must obtain this certificate from a medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. Along with the certificate, you’ll have to bring a current valid driver’s license, and proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency. For this you’ll want something like a green card, social security card or birth certificate. Once that is all in order, you still have the test to worry about. The exam is a 50 question puzzler, with head-scratching multiple choice questions that must be answered within one hour. If you finish with less than 40 correct, you fail the test and will have to come back to the DMV (and wait in line again) another day. Don’t let that happen to you.
