Earning your Maryland CDL requires passing the Maryland CDL General Knowledge Exam and the CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Test. The Maryland CDL General Knowledge Exam includes questions specific to pre-trip inspection materials. Our Maryland CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Tests are specifically designed to cover all necessary topics. Passing the knowledge exam is a prerequisite for obtaining a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which is required before you can even take the skills test for a CDL. Additionally, if you fail the knowledge exam, you’ll need to wait at least seven days for a retest and pay a retest fee. Our practice tests provide the tools you need to pass the knowledge exam on your first attempt. As a bonus, this preparation will also help you with your hands-on Pre-Trip Inspection test, which demands that you accurately assess your vehicle’s condition. According to federal regulations 49 CFR § 392.7 and 49 CFR § 396.13, this inspection is required and is one of three skills tests that must be passed to receive a full CDL (alongside the basic control skills test and road test).
For both the Maryland CDL General Knowledge Exam and the CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Test, you’ll need to identify and thoroughly check the vehicle’s engine compartment, cab controls, lights, tires, brakes, suspension, and cargo securement. In Maryland’s Pre-trip Inspection Procedures, you must be able to physically point to, touch, and name each component during your pre-trip inspection test and explain why it is being inspected during the pre-trip test, all within a 45-minute time limit. Failure of even one part of this exam means if you don’t pass the pre-trip inspection, you must retake all components of the skills test, not just the portion you failed. Your examiner must attest that you can determine whether all parts are in good working condition and free of defects.
This practice test is based on the most recent Maryland CDL manual (Maryland CDL Handbook 2025) and contains 20 multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of pre-trip inspections. Unlike less effective study guides, our approach includes detailed explanations after each response, providing immediate feedback and ensuring you pass the official knowledge test on your first attempt.
