Whether you’re looking for the distinct smell of the mountains or the sea salt scent of the coastline, you’ll find it in the terrain of North Carolina. Adding the Doubles and Triples Trailers endorsement to your North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a must for adding credibility and an assortment of new options and income-producing marketability. The main requirement is passing a 20-question multiple-choice knowledge test. To pass, you’ll need a score of 80%, which means getting 16 correct answers. After you pass, you’ll receive the “T” endorsement on your CDL, authorizing you to pull two or three trailers (where allowed) (North Carolina CDL Handbook 2025).
In the Tar Heel State, you need only be 18 years old to add this certification to your CDL (but you won’t be allowed to haul cargo across state lines until you turn 21). With a Doubles and Triples Trailers endorsement, though, you’re only allowed to pull double trailers in North Carolina. That said, double trailers are used throughout North Carolina for the transport of tobacco products, textiles and apparel, furniture and wood products, and agricultural products like sweet potatoes, corn, poultry, and hogs.
