Don’t waltz into the North Carolina DMV unprepared. If you do, you’ll find yourself coming back more times than you’d like. Frankly, one visit would be ideal, therefore it’s important to know what you need to do before you go. Getting your North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License is a little bit of a process but it is possible to be expedient about it, if you prepare properly. First, let’s remember the General Knowledge test you’ll face when you apply. It’s a 50 multiple-choice question exam that you have to finish in just one hour. Get more than 10 wrong (less than an 80%) and you’ll fail and have to take off another weekday to visit the DMV. The questions are tricky and you will need to study the official North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License Manual to have a chance of passing. Our practice exams include hints and tricks to give you the confidence you need to pass on the first try. However, before you reach the test, you need to make sure you have your paperwork in order. Initially, you’ll want to obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate which proves that you are physically capable of driving a commercial vehicle. You can get one from any licensed medical examiner as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry, but your doctor may not be on that list, so make sure you check before visiting. Then they will also want to make sure you have your valid, current, driver’s license as well as proof of citizenship or legal permanent residency like a green card, social security card or birth certificate. With all that, along with the comfort of knowing you are prepped for the exam, you will be able to leave the North Carolina DMV with CDL in hand after just one visit.
