If you’re looking to obtain your commercial driver’s license in North Dakota you need to get a handle on a number of things before you head to the DOT. First you’ll need to pick of a DOT card, which is also known as a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. The certificate is to prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle in the great state of North Dakota. These certificates usually last two years, unless you have a condition that needs monitoring, like high blood pressure. However, you can’t get the certificate at any medical professionals office, you have to go to a licensed medical examiner as listed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The other paperwork you need includes a current valid driver’s license and proof of citizenship or permanent legal residence. For this a green card, birth certificate or social security card will work. After considering the paperwork you have to bring, there’s the question of the General Knowledge exam. The test is 50 multiple-choice questions, but they aren’t common knowledge. Get more than 10 wrong and that’s considered a failing grade. If you fail you’ll have to find another weekday to come to the DOT… and that’s no fun. To avoid failing the test you’ll want to pick up the official North Dakota Commercial Driver’s Manual, and take some useful practice tests that will give you context as to how the facts in the manual will be arranged on the test.
