Free Oregon CDL Permit Practice Test: General Knowledge 2025

Oregon is a magical place for sightseeing on the open road. The vistas are numerous, including Mount Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, and the coastal views on U.S. Route 101. As a commercial driver, however, you may have to drive with extreme caution through much of Oregon in the wintertime. Western Oregon can be rainy, resulting in slippery roads and lower visibility. Also, the Siskiyou Pass is one of the most dangerous sections of road on Interstate 5. This mountain pass has a 6 percent downgrade for six miles of winding, often foggy, snowy, or icy road with sharp curves.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before you can legally do any commercial driving, you must have a CDL. And before you can get a CDL, you must first obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) so you can practice commercial driving under the supervision of a CDL holder. One of the most important steps in your obtaining a CLP is to pass the official General Knowledge test on commercial driving theory. And we can help!

The official knowledge test is based on the official Oregon Commercial Driver Manual – but this manual isn’t that easy to study. It’s formatted like a reference work, not like a tutorial or textbook for self-study. That is why you should supplement your reading of the manual with other study tools, such as our practice tests.

Our practice tests are based on the official Oregon Commercial Driver Manual, just like the official knowledge test. And they’re formatted similarly and up to date as of March, 2025. This free Oregon CDL permit practice test you’re about to take has 50 multiple-choice questions on such topics as cargo management, following distance, and vehicle components. Each question comes with a helpful hint and an explanation of the correct answer. Unlike the official test, however, this practice test has no time limit, and you can retake it as often as you wish to help you learn the material. Depending on the class of CDL you’ll be applying for and the type of vehicles you expect to be driving commercially, you may have to pass other official knowledge tests as well. Some of these are for endorsements on your CDL, allowing you to drive such specialized vehicles as tank trucks or school buses. Other knowledge tests are for removing restrictions that come with your CDL, such as the restrictions prohibiting you from driving combination vehicles or vehicles with air brakes.
