The 40 multiple-choice questions on the written knowledge test required to get your Minnesota learner’s permit or driver’s license are based on the 2024 Minnesota Driver’s Manual. To pass the exam, you’ll need to correctly answer at least 32 of the 40 questions. To qualify for a permit, you’ll need to be at least 15 years old, pass a vision test, be able to provide proof of identity, residence, and social security number. As a minor, you’ll also be required to prove you’ve completed an in-classroom driver’s education course and have enrolled in a behind-the-wheel focused driver’s education course. The written test and eventual driving test are both free of charge for your first and second attempts; after that, you’ll need to pay a fee. Once you pass, your physical permit will cost $13.25 and is valid for two years, while you practice your driving skills under supervision. Use this DVS practice test to help you pass on your first try.
