If you’re applying for your learner license or driver’s license in Montana, you’ll first need to pass a written knowledge test based on the 2024 Montana Driver Manual. You’ll be required to make an appointment with your local MVD testing center to take the multiple-choice 33-question test. You must answer at least 27 of the questions correctly to pass and be eligible for your license. Minors will participate in the state’s graduated driver’s license program and may partake with a Traffic Education Learner License as early as 14 ½, if they’re enrolled in a driver’s education course. Those who are 15 and have completed a traffic course, or 16 without a class, can take the written test for a one-year learner license. The licenses will cost $5 after you’ve passed the written exam, a vision test, provided parental consent, and showed proof of identity and residence. Once you’ve held your learner license for six months, and have logged 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel experience, you may take your driving test for a first-year restricted license. This MVD practice test can help you study before your exam appointment.
