The written knowledge test is the first requirement to receive a driver’s license or learner’s permit in Montana. The test consists of 33 multiple-choice questions based on the 2024 Montana Driver Manual. You’ll need to answer at least 27 questions to pass correctly. You may apply for a permit as young as 14 ½ if you’re enrolled in an approved driver’s education course. Most drivers apply for their learner license at 15 if they’ve completed a driving course or at 16 without a traffic education program. To get your learner license, the first step in the graduated driver’s license program is to pass the written knowledge exam, a vision test, provide parental consent, provide proof of residence and identity, and pay the $5 license fee. Licenses in Montana cost $5 for each year they are valid for, with most adult licenses valid for eight years, which would then be $40. This MVD practice test will have questions like those you’ll see on your exam, with topics ranging from road signage to driving rules, safe driving habits, and physical requirements for driving.
