To obtain a Alaska DMV instruction (learner’s) permit, you must be at least 14 years old and pass a vision screening and the written permit knowledge test. Alaska does not require participation in a driver’s education program. The permit test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions covering topics outlined in the state’s Alaska DMV 2025 Driver’s Manual. To pass, you must score at least 80% (20 out of 20 questions) in person or with the Alaska online program called “Know to Drive.” If you fail, you must wait until the next business day and pay a retest fee. Using our practice tests ensures that doesn’t happen.
Our free online Alaska DMV Permit Practice Test is regularly updated to February 2025 to reflect the latest state manual. The test simulates real-world conditions and is designed to provide immediate feedback on any missed questions, which has been shown to increase the student’s learning rate.
The Instruction Permit is the first phase of Alaska’s Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program for drivers under 18. At age 14, teens can apply for this permit but must be accompanied at all times by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age. After holding the instruction permit for at least six months, completing 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours of night driving or in bad weather), and passing the road skills test, teens can apply for a provisional license. This license has restrictions, like no driving from 1 AM to 5 AM unless necessary for work or school. At age 16, after holding the provisional license for at least six months without any traffic violations, teens can apply for an unrestricted driver’s license.
If you’re 18 or older, the GDL restrictions do not apply. You must still obtain an instruction permit per the above procedures, but once you feel prepared, you can immediately sign up for the skills test and, if passed, obtain your unrestricted license.
Once you’re ready to apply for the permit, go to the DMV with proof of identity (birth certificate, passport), Social Security card, and two proofs of residence (utility bill, bank statement). If under 18, you must have signed consent (in person) from a parent, legal guardian, or adult spouse. Submit the documents, pass a vision screening, pay the fee, and pass the official written test.
