In California, countless recreational and business opportunities are accessible by car. Savor the ocean vistas along the Pacific Coast Highway. Go hiking or rock climbing in the Joshua Tree National Park. (Take plenty of photos!) Go skiing or snowboarding in Big Bear. Want to commute to work by car? Try high-tech in Silicon Valley; film, TV, or music in Los Angeles; finance or technology in the Bay Area; biotech or aerospace in San Diego; or agribusiness in the Central Valley. The main thing stopping you is the lack of a driver’s license. Let’s see how to start the process of obtaining one.
If you’re under 18 or have never driven before, your path to a driver’s license will start with obtaining an instruction permit to practice driving under supervision.
To be eligible for a permit, you must be at least 15½ years old, fill out an application, meet the documentation requirements, and pass a vision exam and an official knowledge test. You may take the knowledge test online or at a DMV field office. If you’re under 18, you must also be enrolled in or have completed an approved driver education course, and your parent or guardian must sign your application.
The knowledge test has 46 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (California DMV Driver's Handbook 2025: Interactive Manual w/Audio). The passing score is 80%.
This is our fourth California Permit Practice Test. All our permit practice tests have been designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. These practice tests are also based on the official California driver’s manual. Feel free to ask our AI Assistant for help with any practice question. You can ask it for a hint or a clarification. If you still miss the question, the AI assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
Looking for a PDF list of the exact questions (with answers) you’ll encounter on your knowledge (permit) test? To assemble the questions for a knowledge test, the DMV draws questions randomly from an extensive database of candidate questions, so even Nostradamus and the Oracle of Delphi might be unable to predict the exact questions you’ll face. However, our practice test questions have proven close to the official written test questions. In addition, we’ve created two downloadable PDF “cheat sheets” (though they’re not for actual cheating!): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter at least some of these questions on your written knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed.
