In Connecticut, all new drivers, regardless of age, must obtain a learner’s permit to practice supervised driving before they can take the road test for a driver’s license. To obtain a permit, you must be at least 16 years old, meet all the documentation requirements, pass a vision test, and pass an official knowledge (permit) test on driving theory.
The knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (Connecticut DMV Handbook (CT Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%. You can take the knowledge test only at certain DMV offices, not online. If you’re under 18, your parent or guardian must come with you to the knowledge test or fill out a form to give their consent.
All new drivers, regardless of age, must complete an eight-hour course on safe driving practices before becoming eligible for a license. The other requirements for a license depend on your age.
If you’re under 18, you will follow the Connecticut Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. You must complete a driver training program, hold the permit for 120 days (if you took a high school or commercial training course) or 180 days (if you took at-home training), and pass a road test. You will be issued a restricted driver’s license, whose restrictions will end when you turn 18.
If you’re at least 18 years old, you are exempt from GDL, and you don’t have to take driver training. You can take the road test after holding your permit for 90 days. You’ll be issued an unrestricted driver’s license after you pass the road test.
This is our fourth Connecticut Permit Practice Test. All our permit practice tests have been designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. These practice tests are also based on the official Connecticut driver’s manual and have a similar multiple-choice format. Feel free to call on our AI Assistant for help with any practice question.
Do you wish you had a PDF list of the exact knowledge test questions and answers you’ll face? Unfortunately, that we can’t give you. To create a knowledge test, the DMV draws questions randomly from a big database of available questions, so we can’t predict the exact questions you’ll face. However, we do have two PDF “cheat sheets” (i.e., quick references, not for actual cheating!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter at least some of these questions on your knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed.
