Life in the District of Columbia getting you down? Get a driver’s license, and you can get behind the wheel and go for a relaxing weekend getaway whenever you wish.
In the District of Columbia, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain a learner permit to practice supervised driving before applying for a driver’s license. One key requirement for obtaining a learner permit is to pass an official DMV knowledge test on safe driving.
The official knowledge test is based on information contained in the official District of Columbia driver’s manual (District of Columbia DMV Handbook (DC Driver's Manual) 2025). Therefore, you should start preparing for the knowledge test by studying this manual. However, this alone may not prepare you well enough. In 2022, about 47.3% – nearly half – of those who took the knowledge test failed it on their first attempt. Evidently, just reading the official driver’s manual before the knowledge test did not prepare them well enough to pass it.
We have created learning tools to supplement the official driver’s manual. This is our fourth District of Columbia Permit Practice Test. Like our first three permit practice tests, it’s intended to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. Like the official knowledge test, these practice tests are based on the official District of Columbia driver’s manual.
Watch the Progress Bar to keep track of your score in real time. Choose the best or most complete answer for each question. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to discuss it or give you a hint. You can also ask it your own questions about driving. When you get a question right, the question will turn green. If you miss a question, the question will turn red, and the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
Do you wish you had a PDF list of the exact District of Columbia questions and answers you’ll encounter on your official knowledge test? Unfortunately, we don’t have one. The DMV randomly draws test questions from a vast pool of available questions. It’s impossible to predict which questions it will draw for your test.
However, our practice test questions have proven close to the official questions in the past. And we have two PDF “cheat sheets” (in the sense of quick references, not for actual cheating!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” These are the questions most likely to appear on your knowledge test. We’re positive that at least some of them will be there. Each question listed comes with the correct answer, which you should study and memorize.
