Aspiring drivers in Maine must complete the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program to obtain a driver’s license. Teens between 15 and 17 years of age must pass a 30-question knowledge test and a vision test to obtain a learner’s permit. This permit is valid for 2 years and allows its holder to drive with a licensed adult aged 20 or older who has had a license for at least 2 years. To proceed to an intermediate license, you must hold a learner’s permit for at least 6 months, complete 70 hours of driving practice (10 at night), and pass a road test. The full license becomes available once you turn 18 and gives full driving privileges with no restrictions.
Adults follow a similar process but skip the intermediate stage of the GDL. The full license becomes available after passing the road exam. As you begin your learning phase, it is crucial to avoid rushing. Driving is a lifelong skill that cannot be learned overnight. Dedicate the following weeks to studying driving theory and use our Maine DMV Written Test Study Guide practice test to boost your learning potential. This intuitive tool has been designed to closely reflect the content and format of the official exam. You get unlimited attempts and nonstop access to practice as often as your schedule allows. All 20 questions are based on the official Maine Driver’s License Manual (Maine DMV Handbook (ME Driver's Manual) 2025).
Do not get discouraged if you make a mistake. Beginners unfamiliar with driving theory should ignore their score during their first few attempts and focus on learning. We provide immediate feedback for each question, helping you understand the reasoning behind the correct answer. Pay attention to the detailed explanation and note it down in a notebook or notebook app for future reference.
The roads of Maine are yours to explore, but you must do so responsibly. When you get behind the wheel, you should always prioritize safety. Studying driving theory not only helps you pass the official written knowledge test but also makes you a safe and responsible driver.
