In Maine, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain a learner’s permit before applying for a driver’s license. One crucial requirement to obtain a learner’s permit is to pass two official tests: a vision test and an official written knowledge exam on driving theory. You must take the written test at a DMV branch office or an approved driving school, not online. If you’re under 18, you must complete a driver’s education course before taking the knowledge test. You must also provide written consent from your parent or guardian and proof that you are either enrolled in or have graduated from high school or the equivalent (e.g., GED). (If you’re at least 18 years old, a driver’s education course is not required, but it can still be helpful if you lack driving experience.)
The knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (Maine DMV Handbook (ME Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%.
This is our fourth Maine Permit Practice Test. Like our previous three practice tests, it is designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. These practice tests are based on the official Maine driver’s handbook. All practice questions are multiple choice. You must choose the best or most complete answer for each question.
Feel free to ask our AI Assistant for help with any practice question. You can ask it to elaborate further or give you a hint. If you still miss the question, the AI assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
You can retake this practice test as often as you wish until you’ve mastered the material. Each time, the order of the questions will be randomized.
One thing we can’t give you is a PDF list of the exact Maine test questions and answers you’ll encounter on your written knowledge exam. To create a knowledge test, the DMV draws questions randomly from an extensive database of available questions, so we can’t predict the exact questions you’ll face. However, our practice test questions have proven to be a good match to the knowledge questions that have appeared in the past. Also, we do have two PDF “cheat sheets” (i.e., quick references, not for actual cheating!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter at least some of these questions on your knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed. Try to memorize as many of these questions and answers as you can.
