Would you like to be among the first people in the continental United States to see the sun rise each day? Drive to Eastport. At 67°0’14″W longitude, Eastport is the easternmost city in the continental United States. Interestingly, the part of Maine that is east of 67.5°W longitude, including Eastport, is geographically in the Atlantic Time Zone, even though all of Maine is officially in the Eastern Time Zone. But what if you don’t have a driver’s license? Then someone else will have to drive you there.
To obtain a driver’s license, you must meet a series of requirements, including passing three tests: a vision test, a written knowledge test, and a road test. The written knowledge test consists of 30 questions based on the official driver’s manual (Maine DMV Handbook (ME Driver's Manual) 2025). The questions cover Maine traffic laws and regulations (especially the laws on drinking and driving), safe driving skills and vehicle handling, and road signs and signals. The passing score is 80%.
Please don’t assume that all you have to do to pass the written test is read the driver’s manual a couple of times beforehand. Other aspiring drivers found out that it wasn’t so easy. In 2020 – 2023, 32.6% – nearly one-third – of aspiring drivers in Maine failed their knowledge written test on their first try.
We’ve created a test preparation program with tools to help you pass the written test. These tools include a series of practice tests with questions based on the official manual and an automated assistant to help you with hints and explanations of the correct answers. Once you’ve gone through our program, you’ll know more than enough about driving to pass the written knowledge test. We guarantee it – or your money back!
Do you tend to experience test anxiety when taking official tests? If so, here is another practice test for you to try: our special Exam Simulator test. This test operates in Simulated Exam Mode to closely resemble official knowledge test conditions. The test consists of 30 questions based on the official manual, just like the test questions on the official DMV permit test. The passing score is 80%, just like the official permit test. There are no hints, no explanations, and no automated assistant. The test ends prematurely if you fail it (miss 20% of the questions).
This Exam Simulator test gives you a realistic formal exam experience. By showing you what the official written test experience will be like, the Exam Simulator may reduce your fear of the unknown and your anxiety about the official written test.
Good luck!
