In New Hampshire, getting a driver’s license is a step-by-step process designed to help you become a safe and responsible driver. Unlike many states, New Hampshire doesn’t issue learner’s permits. Instead, you can begin supervised driving once you’re age 15½ (accompanied by a licensed adult at least 25 years old and seated in the front passenger seat). Once you turn 16, you can apply for a youth operator license and take the official written knowledge exam. This test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions based on the official New Hampshire Driver’s Manual (New Hampshire DMV Handbook (NH Driver's Manual) 2025). Aspiring drivers use this handbook as their primary resource for studying driving theory. While you should read its contents at least once, there are other tools that can make studying more efficient.
Our New Hampshire DMV Written Test Study Guide practice test is an interactive tool with 20 questions based on the official driver’s handbook. This practice test is not timed, so you won’t have to rush through the questions. Complete each session at your own pace, read every question twice, and only select an answer when you’re confident of your choice. If you have difficulty reading the small text, you can use the slider from the “Test settings” menu to adjust the font size. Make the text bigger until it becomes easier to read to avoid eye strain during extended study sessions.
Now you can receive personalized help from our automated assistant, which is available during each practice session. Initiate a conversation and request real-life examples and further explanations that can help you understand the reasoning behind each correct answer. You can also request hints that nudge you in the right direction without revealing the correct answer. To reset your progress, you can use the “Restart test” button on the top-right side of the page. Click on it to begin a new practice session with a randomized order of questions.
Driving is a lifelong skill that can only be improved with behind-the-wheel practice. But before you get there, you must master driving theory and improve your knowledge gradually. Our New Hampshire DMV Written Test Study Guide practice test can boost your learning potential and get you there faster. With unlimited attempts and nonstop access, you can practice whenever your schedule allows it.
