New Mexico’s desert highways often have long, open stretches with minimal traffic. Drivers often encounter wildlife crossing signs on these roads, especially in areas known as wildlife corridors. These signs alert drivers to the presence of animals like deer and elk, helping to reduce accidents. During dawn and dusk, animals are most active and likely to cross. When navigating these expansive desert highways, it is crucial to remain focused on the road ahead and watch for animal crossing signs.
Beginner drivers who want to obtain a driver’s license in the Land of Enchantment must pass a written knowledge test. This exam evaluates your knowledge of various aspects of driving theory, including safe driving practices, road signs, traffic laws, and handling emergency situations. All this information can be found in the official MVD driver’s handbook (New Mexico MVD Handbook (NM Driver's Manual) 2025), which is a useful resource. This manual also describes several road signs and their meanings. Study these signs in detail and observe the differences between them. They have many different shapes and colors, so pay close attention to their unique features, such as the messages they convey and the situations they address. For example, the shape of a sign often indicates its purpose: octagons are reserved for stop signs, triangles indicate yield signs, and rectangles provide useful information or indicate regulations that must be obeyed.
Our New Mexico Road Signs practice tests can help you memorize these signs through repetition. Each practice test contains 25 questions based on the road signs described in the official driver’s manual. To pass, you must score at least 80%, but it is perfectly normal to fail during your first few sessions. At the top-left corner of the page, the “Test settings” menu opens a list of features you can use to customize your experience. The font size slider allows you to increase or decrease the size of the text until it becomes easy to read. Avoid eye strain by periodically resting your eyes and activating the voiceover function, which uses an artificial voice to read the questions and answer choices aloud. However, you’ll still have to open your eyes to see the image featuring the sign!
