You must meet a series of requirements to obtain a driver’s license in North Carolina. Among other requirements, you must be at least 16 years old and pass four official tests: a vision test, a traffic signs test, a written knowledge test on driving theory, and a driving (road) test of your driving skills.
If you’re under 18, you must obtain a learner’s permit before you may apply for a provisional license (the next step in graduated licensing for teens). Your permit will allow you to practice driving under supervision. You must be at least 15 years old for a permit. The vision, traffic signs, and knowledge tests must also be passed for a permit. If you’re at least 18 years old, a learner’s permit is optional (should you need supervised driving practice before taking the driving skills test).
All questions on the North Carolina DMV written test and traffic signs test are based on the North Carolina DMV driver’s manual (North Carolina DMV Handbook (NC Driver's Manual) 2025).
This test is the second of our five North Carolina Permit Practice Tests. These tests are intended to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test and road signs test on their first try. All five permit practice tests are multiple choice. You must choose the best or most complete answer for each question. Like the official knowledge and signs tests, these practice tests are up to date as of March 2025 and based on the official North Carolina driver’s manual.
Our AI Assistant can help you with any practice test question. If a practice question stumps you, ask the AI Assistant to elaborate or give you a hint. You can also ask your own questions about driving. If you still miss the question, the AI assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
We have also created two quick references (“cheat sheets”): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” These are the questions most likely to appear on your knowledge and traffic signs tests, respectively. Each question is listed with the correct answer, which you should study and memorize.
However, what about the big test day itself? Are you afraid you might forget something essential or freeze up? To help, we created our own North Carolina Permit Test Study Guide. It covers how to prepare your mind and body for the tests, what documents you must take with you, and what fees you may have to pay – plus a couple of tips on taking multiple-choice tests. Be ready to take the 25 license test questions in North Carolina with our help.
