North Carolina DMV Fines and Limits Permit Practice Test 2024

  • Perfect for learner’s permit, driver’s license, and Senior Refresher Test
  • Based on official North Carolina Driver's manual
  • Updated for December 2024

You’re studying hard to pass the knowledge test for a North Carolina learner permit. After that, you’ll practice driving to pass the driving test for a driver license. After all that time and effort, it would be a crying shame to do something dumb and lose your license! This free North Carolina Fines and Limits permit practice test may help prevent that as well as help you pass your knowledge test.

This special 50-question practice test is about the consequences of violating North Carolina’s traffic laws. It’s up to date as of December 2024. It’s based on North Carolina’s official driver’s manual (North Carolina DMV Handbook (NC Driver's Manual) 2024) and the North Carolina General Statutes. And like the other North Carolina permit practice tests we offer, the Fines and Limits permit practice test comes with our automated assistant, which can supply you with hints and explanations of the correct answers.

On this practice test, you’ll learn about the number of points that can be added to your driving record for such common offenses as littering, speeding, tailgating, running a stop sign, failing to yield the right-of-way, and passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights; the consequences of accumulating excessive points on your driving record; and how points can be removed from your driving record. You’ll also learn what may happen to your driver license if you’re convicted of a more serious offense: How long will your license be suspended if you leave the scene of an accident (hit and run)? How many convictions for driving while impaired (DWI) will result in a mandatory jail sentence or a felony criminal record?

In North Carolina in 2022, there were 273,132 total traffic crashes, including 1,647 fatal crashes with 1,784 fatalities. 11,850 (4.3%) of the total crashes and 448 (25.1%) of the fatalities involved alcohol consumption. 16,713 (6.1%) of the total crashes and 426 (23.9%) of the fatalities involved exceeding the speed limit or the safe speed for the conditions.

For the total crashes, the most frequent contributing circumstances were failure to reduce speed (65,939), driver inattention (44,440), failure to yield the right of way (42,184), improper lane change (15,566), and exceeding the safe speed for the conditions (12,504). For the fatal crashes, the most frequent contributing circumstances were erratic, reckless, careless, negligent, or aggressive driving (375); crossed centerline/going wrong way (325); alcohol use (293); exceeding the speed limit (285); and failure to yield the right of way (156).

If you violate North Carolina’s traffic laws, many bad things can happen. Learn what can happen so you can pass the official knowledge test and stay out of trouble whenever you’re on the road.
