In North Dakota, recreational and business opportunities accessible by car abound. Escape into nature on the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Loop Drive, or steep yourself in Native American history on the Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway. Explore the bustling nightlife in Fargo or nightlife with a college vibe in Grand Forks. Commute to work in agribusiness in Fargo or Grand Forks or in the energy sector in the Bakken Formation. However, if you don’t have a driver’s license, someone else will have to drive you around.
Your path to a driver’s license will usually start with your obtaining an instruction permit so you can practice driving under supervision. (There is one exception: If you’re taking a high school driver’s education course whose school district has enough insurance to cover you, you won’t need a permit to practice driving under the supervision of your driving instructor.)
To be eligible for a permit, you must be at least 14 years old, meet the documentation requirements, and pass a vision exam and an official knowledge test. You may take the knowledge test online or at a DOT Driver License office. If you’re under 18, your parent, guardian, or designated person must give their signed consent on your application.
The knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (North Dakota DMV Handbook (ND Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%.
This is our fourth North Dakota Permit Practice Test. All our permit practice tests have been designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DOT knowledge test. These practice tests are also based on the official North Dakota driver’s manual. Feel free to ask our AI Assistant for help with any practice question. You can ask it for a hint or a clarification. If you still miss the question, the AI assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation of it.
Unfortunately, we can’t provide you with a PDF list of the exact questions and answers you’ll encounter on your official knowledge test. To create a knowledge test, the DOT draws questions randomly from a pool of candidate questions, so we can’t predict the exact questions you’ll face. However, our practice test questions have proven similar to the official knowledge test questions we’ve learned about. Also, we do have two PDF “cheat sheets” (not for actual cheating, though!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter at least some of these questions on your knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed.
