In Vermont, if you’ve never held any driving credentials before, you must obtain a learner’s permit to practice supervised driving before you may take the road test for a driver’s license. To get a learner’s permit, you must be at least 15 years old, fill out an application, submit the appropriate documentation, pass a vision test, and pass the DMV written learner’s permit test on driving theory. You must take the written permit test online. The test is available in 15 languages. If you’re under 18, your parent or legal guardian must sign your application, thus giving their signed consent.
All questions on the Vermont DMV written test are based on the official Vermont DMV driver’s manual (Vermont DMV Handbook (VT Driver's Manual) 2025). The DMV publishes versions of this manual in sixteen languages. They also publish an audiobook version and an interactive online tutorial version, both in English.
Unfortunately, many aspiring drivers had read the manual but failed the written test anyway. We have created learning tools to supplement the official driver’s manual. This is our second Vermont Permit Practice Test. All five of our permit practice tests were designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test on their first try. Like the official knowledge test, these practice tests are multiple choice. You must choose the best or most complete answer for each question. And like the official knowledge test, these practice tests are based on the official DMV driver’s manual and are up to date as of March 2025.
Ask our AI Assistant for help with a practice question at any time. If you’re stuck on a question, ask the AI Assistant to give you a hint or discuss the question in greater depth.
The Progress Bar will keep track of your score as you proceed through this practice test. When you get a question right, it will turn green and you’ll proceed to the next question. If you answer incorrectly, the question will turn red, and the AI Assistant will show you the correct answer and an explanation.
Concerned that you might freeze up or forget something important on the day of the permit test? We also offer our own Vermont Permit Test Study Guide with suggestions on what to do as the day of your knowledge test approaches. It covers how to prepare your mind and body for the test, what documents to have on hand, what fees you may have to pay, and which written permit test questions are most often missed.
