Road signs are categorized into three main types: regulatory signs, warning signs and informational signs. As a licensed driver, you must easily identify these signs and understand their meaning when you see them at the side of the road. Whether you are driving in Richmond or through the rural landscapes in the north, you’ll encounter all sorts of road signs along the way.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is responsible for issuing driver’s licenses in the Old Dominion. To obtain one, you must pass a vision test; a written knowledge test on traffic laws, rules of the road, safe driving practices and road signs; and a road skills test. We’ll help you with the road signs part of this knowledge exam by offering a helpful tool. After studying the road signs and their meanings from the official DMV driver’s handbook (Virginia DMV Handbook (VA Driver's Manual) 2025), you can train on our Virginia DMV Road Signs practice tests before taking the knowledge exam.
Each practice test consists of 25 questions exclusively on road signs, and to pass, you must score at least 80%. Each question has multiple answer options, but only one is correct. It is perfectly normal to get stuck on a difficult question. Maybe you don’t remember a sign, or you’re confusing it with another one. Simply ask our automated assistant to give you a hint if you want to be nudged in the right direction. Doing so will not reveal the correct answer, but it will help you get an idea of the respective sign.
After selecting an answer, you’ll notice a percentage beside each choice if you have the answer popularity feature turned on. This statistic gives you insight into the performance of other student drivers who answered that question. You can turn this feature on and off, along with several others, by accessing the test settings section in the upper-left corner of your screen. From there, you can personalize each session to match your preferences and make it easier for you to train on these practice tests.
