In Washington, if you’re under 18, you must obtain a learner’s permit (to practice driving under supervision) before you may apply for a driver’s license. You can apply for a learner’s permit as early as age 15 if you’ve enrolled in a driver’s education course; otherwise, you must wait till age 15½ to apply for a permit. Requirements for a permit include obtaining signed consent from your parent or guardian and passing a vision screening, a medical screening, and a knowledge test on driving theory.
If you’re at least 18 years old, you must still pass the vision and medical screenings and the knowledge test before obtaining a license. However, a learner’s permit is optional. You must obtain a learner’s permit if you plan to apply for a license online (at the DOL website) or you need more supervised driving practice before taking the driving (road) test. You must also hold a permit to take the behind-the-wheel driving part of a driver’s education course.
This is our fourth Washington Permit Practice Test. It’s designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DOL knowledge test. Like the official knowledge test, this practice test is based on the official Washington driver’s manual (Washington DOL Handbook (WA Driver's Manual) 2025).
These practice questions are multiple choice. Each question comes with several answer options. You must choose the best or most complete answer. If you’re unsure of the correct answer, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint or clarify the question. You can also ask it your own questions about driving. The Progress Bar will keep track of your score. If you answer the question correctly, it will turn green in the Progress Bar. If you miss the practice question, it will turn red, and the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
One thing we can’t give you is a PDF list of the exact test questions and answers you’ll encounter on your knowledge test. The DOL draws questions randomly from a huge pool of candidate questions, and only they know which questions they’re including on your test. However, our tools can give you a good idea of what to expect. First, our practice test questions have proven close to the official test questions we know of. Second, we have also created two PDF “cheat sheets” (quick references, not for actual cheating!): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” These are the most likely questions to appear on your knowledge test. Each question listed comes with the correct answer, which you can study and memorize.
