To earn a Wyoming learner’s permit, you must first pass the vision screening and a written permit knowledge test, which consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. These questions cover Wyoming traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and vehicle operation as described in the state’s Department of Transportation Manual. To pass the test, you must answer at least 20 (80%) correctly. Failing the test will require you to wait at least 24 hours and pay a retesting fee, so use our resources to make sure that doesn’t happen. Wyoming does not offer an online option for the permit test, so testing must take place in person at the DOT.
In Wyoming, the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program is designed to incrementally introduce driving privileges for applicants under 18. At age 15, teens can apply for a learner’s permit, which requires adult supervision from a licensed driver. Unlike many states that require an age of 21 for this supervising adult, in Wyoming, the age requirement is 18. After holding the permit for 10 days, completing a state-approved driver education course, and passing a road skills test, teens can apply for an intermediate license. With an intermediate license, you can drive without adult supervision except between 11 PM and 5 AM, unless you’re driving to or from work, school, or church. There are also passenger limitations in this phase for the first six months unless you have a licensed driver aged 18 or older with you. Once you are 16½ and have held the intermediate license with no violations for a minimum of six months, you can apply for a full license.
Updated for January 2025, our free online Wyoming Permit Practice Test mimics what you will face on the official written test. It will help you pass by providing questions and answers based on the Wyoming DOT 2025 Driver Handbook. Our practice tests provide instant feedback so that if you miss a question, you’ll know right away why a different response is better.
Once you’re ready, go to the DOT with proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), proof of Social Security number, proof of residency, and parental or guardian consent for applicants under 18. Submit the documents, pass a vision screening, pay the fee, and take the official written test.
