In the United States, about 37 people die in alcohol-related crashes every day: about one fatality every 39 minutes. About one-third of all traffic deaths involve alcohol consumption. In 2022, 13,524 people died in traffic crashes in which alcohol was a contributing factor. That same year, there were also 12,151 speeding-related deaths nationwide. Speeding was a contributing factor in 29 percent of traffic fatalities.
In Colorado in 2022, there were 764 total traffic fatalities or 1.42 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT). This was slightly higher than the national average of 1.33 traffic fatalities per 100 million VMT that year. Total fatalities included 462 passenger vehicle occupant fatalities, 149 motorcyclist fatalities, 108 pedestrian fatalities, and 15 cyclist fatalities.
260 of the total fatalities were alcohol related (a BAC of 0.08% or higher); 291 fatalities were speeding related.
