Dreaming of driving on Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountains National Park? Or driving to Aspen, Breckinridge, or Vail for some skiing? Or driving to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre to see your favorite band perform while you take in the vistas all around? Whatever your fancy, if you want to drive yourself there, you must have a driver’s license.
In Colorado, all new drivers, regardless of age, must obtain an instruction permit to practice supervised driving before they can take the drive (road) test for a driver’s license. The requirements for obtaining an instruction permit include being at least 15 years old, passing a vision test, and passing a knowledge (written) test on safe driving. (You may take the knowledge test online.) You must also obtain consent from a parent or guardian if you’re under 18. You must also complete a driver’s education course before your drive test if you’re under 16½.
The knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions covering road signs and signals, driving under the influence, driving rules, safety rules, and legal items. All questions are based on the official driver’s manual (Colorado DMV Handbook (CO Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%.
This is our fourth Colorado Permit Practice Test. All our permit practice tests have been designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. These practice tests are also based on the official Colorado driver’s manual. All practice questions are multiple choice. Each question has several possible answers. You must choose the best or most complete answer.
As you take each practice test, you can call on our AI Assistant for help with any question. You can ask it to give you a hint or explain the question in greater depth. You can also ask it your own questions about driving. If you still miss the question, the AI assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
Do you wish you had a PDF list of the exact Colorado questions and answers you’ll encounter on your knowledge (written) test? Unfortunately, we can’t give you that. The DMV randomly draws test questions from a vast pool of available questions. It’s impossible to predict which questions it will draw for your test.
However, we do have two PDF “cheat sheets” (i.e., quick references, not for actual cheating!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” These are the questions most likely to appear on your knowledge test. It’s a safe bet that at least some of them will be there. Each question listed comes with the correct answer, which you should memorize.
