Hawaii offers instructional permits to residents who are learning to drive, are at least 15 ½ years of age, and who have successfully passed a driving knowledge test. The test is a 30-question multiple-choice test, of which you’ll need to answer a minimum of 25 questions correctly to pass. The exam is generally a written exam, but can also be taken orally at Kapalama and Wahiawa for an additional fee. The written test is $2, the oral test is $10, and if you pass, the permit is $5-10 depending on your location. When you’re ready for your license, the road test will be an additional $8, with a $5-10 license fee. The knowledge exam is based on the 2025 Hawaii Drivers Manual and covers many driving topics, including but not limited to road signs, right of way, pedestrian safety laws, and accident procedures. To get your permit, you’ll need to provide your birth certificate, social security number, and signed parental consent from both your parents. If both parents listed on your birth certificate are not able to sign, you must be able to provide documentation such as a death certificate, or custody agreement. This DMV practice test will help you prepare successfully for the written knowledge exam.
