- Perfect for learner’s permit, driver’s license, and Senior Refresher Test
- Based on official Indiana Driver's manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for July 2025
In Indiana, aspiring drivers must pass a vision test and a 50-question knowledge exam before getting a learner’s permit. Teen applicants between 15 and 16 must also be enrolled in a state-approved driver education course. Underage applicants 16 or older can take the knowledge test and vision screening at the BMV location to receive a learner’s permit without completing a driver education course.
With a permit, the learner driver can practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver at least 25 years of age or a licensed spouse aged 21 years or older. 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night) are mandatory for all applicants. Your driving supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat, ready to intervene if something goes wrong.
If you’re under 21, you must hold your learner’s permit for 180 days. Once you pass the skills test, you’ll be eligible for a probationary driver’s license. If you’ve completed a state-approved driver education program, you can apply at age 16 and 90 days. Without driver education, you must be at least 16 years and 270 days old to apply.
If you’re 21 or older, there is no mandatory permit holding period. You can take the skills test as soon as you feel ready. Upon passing, you will be eligible for a full, non-probationary driver’s license.
We’ll help you pass the official written knowledge test, but you must dedicate several weeks to studying driving theory. The official Indiana Driver’s Manual (Indiana BMV Handbook (IN Driver's Manual) 2025) covers this subject in detail, and the BMV recommends that all aspiring drivers read it multiple times. Our Indiana Driver’s Handbook Practice Test can help you master driving theory through active learning. It consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, which you can answer at your own pace. There’s no timer to pressure you, so please avoid rushing.
This intuitive tool is up to date as of July 2025. You will always practice with the latest version that reflects the latest updates brought by BMV rules or state law. You get immediate feedback on every question. Note this explanation in a notebook or notebook app and use it to reinforce your knowledge. Learn from your mistakes as soon as they occur, and build your confidence with each practice session.
Becoming a safe and responsible driver in Indiana is a long but necessary process. You must master driving theory before you can get behind the wheel and explore the open roads on your own.
