In Iowa, you must pass three official tests for a driver’s license (and also meet some other requirements): a visual screening, a knowledge (permit) test on driving theory, and (with one exception) a driving (road) test. If you’re under 18, you must obtain an instruction permit to practice driving under supervision before applying for a license. For this, you must obtain signed consent from your parent or guardian. (If you’re 18 or older, a permit is optional.) You must pass the vision and knowledge tests for an instruction permit. If you’re under 18, you must also enroll in an approved driver’s education course after obtaining an instruction permit, and you must complete the course before applying for an intermediate license. If your driving instructor certifies that you’re a competent driver, you may apply for a license without passing the official road test.
The knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s license manual (Iowa DMV Handbook (IA Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%.
This is our fourth Iowa Permit Practice Test. Practicing with it will help aspiring drivers like you pass the DOT knowledge test. These practice tests are also based on the official Iowa driver’s license manual. Feel free to ask our AI Assistant for help with any practice question. You can ask it to give you a hint or rephrase the question. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will show you the correct answer and an explanation. Watch the Progress Bar to keep track of your score as you go. When you get a question right, the question will turn green. If you miss a question, the question will turn red.
Looking for a PDF list of the exact questions (with answers) you’ll encounter on your knowledge test? Unfortunately, the DOT selects questions randomly for a knowledge test, so we can’t predict the exact questions you’ll face. However, our practice test questions have proven quite similar to the official knowledge test questions that have appeared in the past. Also, we do have two PDF “cheat sheets” (i.e., quick references, not for actual cheating!) that you can download: “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter at least some of these questions on your knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed.
Does the prospect of taking three official tests scare you? You don’t have to face each one alone. For passing the knowledge test, our test preparation tools will give you the best possible preparation.
