To pass the road test for a Minnesota driver’s license, you must become skilled at driving. To do this, you must obtain an instruction permit to allow you to practice driving under supervision. To obtain a Minnesota instruction permit, you must pass a vision exam and a written knowledge test and meet various documentation requirements, including proper identification, proof of residency, a completed application form, and (if you’re under 18) a certificate of enrollment from an approved driver education course.
The knowledge test has 40 questions based on the official driver’s manual (Minnesota DMV Handbook (MN Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%. Your first attempt at the knowledge test is free. If you fail the written test, you may retake it on the next business day. However, if you fail it twice in a row, you must pay a $10 fee to take it a third time. (Note that fees are subject to change.)
Unfortunately, failure happens all too often. (In 2020 – 2023, about 39.5% of applicants – about two in every five – failed the Minnesota knowledge test on their first try.) Therefore, we’ve provided you with a variety of interactive test preparation tools to help you learn and memorize all the information you need to pass the knowledge test: an audiobook version of the official manual, a comprehensive series of practice tests covering the information in the manual, and an automated assistant that can provide you with hints and explanations to help you answer the practice test questions.
Now it’s time to show that you really are ready to take the official knowledge test!
This Exam Simulator test runs in Exam Mode, resembling official exam conditions. The test consists of 40 questions based on the official manual, just like those on the official Minnesota DVS permit test. The passing score is 80%, just like the official permit test. Unlike our other practice tests, the Exam Simulator test ends prematurely if you fail it (i.e., if you miss more than 20% of the questions). There are no hints, explanations, or other aids to help you answer the test questions. On this test, you’re on your own, just like on the official test!
Do you tend to experience test anxiety when taking official tests? This Exam Simulator is so realistic that you may experience some anxiety while taking it. However, by reducing your fear of the unknown with a realistic exam experience, the Exam Simulator may lessen your anxiety about the official knowledge test.
Good luck!
