Before you may take the road test for a Montana driver’s license, you must become skilled at driving. To do this, you must obtain a learner permit to allow you to practice supervised driving. To obtain a Montana learner permit, you must be (a) at least age 14½ and enrolled in a driver education course, (b) at least age 15 and have completed a driver education course, or (c) at least age 16 otherwise. You must pass a vision exam and a written knowledge test and meet various documentation requirements. Required documents include proof of your identity, proof of your authorized presence in the United States, and proof of your residency in Montana. If you’re under 18, you must also provide a consent form signed by a responsible adult and hold the learner permit for at least six months before you can become eligible for a (restricted) license. Finally, you must pay the appropriate fee.
The written knowledge test has 33 questions based on the official driver’s manual (Montana DMV Handbook (MT Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 82%. We hope you’ve used all the tools we offer to help you pass the written test, especially our series of practice tests. They’re all based on the official driver’s manual and range from easy to hard in levels of difficulty.
Now it’s time to see if you really are ready to take the official written test!
This Exam Simulator test runs in Simulated Exam Mode, resembling official exam conditions. The test consists of 33 questions based on the official Montana manual, just like those on the official MVD written test. The passing score is 82%, just like the official permit test. Unlike our other practice tests, the Exam Simulator test ends prematurely if you fail it (i.e., if you miss more than 18% of the questions). There are no hints, explanations, or other aids to help you answer the test questions. On this test, you’re on your own, just like on the official test!
Do you tend to experience test anxiety when taking official tests? This Exam Simulator is so realistic that you may experience some anxiety while taking it. However, by reducing your fear of the unknown with a realistic exam experience, the Exam Simulator may lessen your anxiety about the official written test.
Good luck!
